Laser and Surgical Procedures Examination

Exam Information

The Laser and Surgical Procedures Examination (LSPE) is designed to assess optometric cognitive ability to appropriately manage and perform certain laser and surgical skills. LSPE is a hybrid examination consisting of both a clinical skills portion and a multiple-choice portion. It is administered at the NCCTO in Charlotte, NC, and is offered to 4th year optometric students, optometric residents, and optometric practitioners. 

The Laser Section and the Surgical Section of LSPE are administered separately. Candidates must register for each section that they wish to take. The Laser and Surgical Sections can be scheduled on two separate days, or both on the same day. 

 

 

Laser Section

For the Laser Section of LSPE, candidates will perform the following clinical skills: Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, Laser Peripheral Iridotomy, and YAG Capsulotomy. Likewise, the multiple-choice portion includes SLT, PI, and YAG Capsulotomy.

Surgical Section

For the Surgical Section of LSPE, candidates will perform the following clinical skills: Suturing and Chalazion Excision. The multiple-choice portion includes: Suturing, Eyelid Surgery, Injections, and Anesthesia.
