Exam Policies and Eligibility
For optometrists to request an official score report to be released to a state board.
Part I ABS®
Part I ABS, or Applied Basic Science, focuses on the scientific foundations of optometry, assessing candidates’ understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and optics. The exam emphasizes the application of basic science concepts to clinical problem-solving.
Part II PAM® / TMOD®
Part II PAM, or Patient Assessment and Management, evaluates clinical decision-making and diagnostic reasoning through patient-based scenarios. It measures a candidate’s ability to interpret findings, develop management plans, and provide evidence-based patient care.
Part III PEPS®
Part III PEPS, or Patient Encounters and Performance Skills Examination is the final part of the core NBEO competency testing sequence that addresses case analysis, critical thinking, and essential skills evaluation in a simulated-live patient encounter. Our state of the art testing facility allows the NBEO to provide the safety, security, and standardization necessary to ensure fairness and validity in a high-stakes testing environment.
ISE®
The ISE, or Injection Skills Examination is a practical assessment of a candidate’s ability to perform safe and proper administration of injections, ensuring readiness for procedures that support patient care and therapeutic intervention.
LSPE®
The LSPE, or Laser and Surgical Procedures Examination, evaluates a candidate’s foundational understanding and applied knowledge of common laser and minor surgical procedures performed in optometric practice. It ensures practitioners meet safety and proficiency standards as scope-of-practice laws expand.
OSLE®
The OSLE, or Optometry Special Licensure Examination, is a state-specific exam that assesses knowledge of local optometric laws and regulations. It ensures that licensed optometrists understand and comply with the legal frameworks governing practice in their jurisdiction.
ACMO®
The ACMO, or Advanced Competence in Medical Optometry, examination is designed to assess advanced competence in the management of ocular disease. The American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry (ABCMO) requires passing this exam as part of its board certification process.
